School Ethos
Scoil Mhuire, Milford is a Catholic school under the patronage of Bishop Alan McGuckian in the diocese of Raphoe.
Scoil Mhuire is a Catholic school where Catholic values and teachings are taught and respected. Our philosophy is based on the notion of each individual being created in the image of the likeness of God.
We aim to provide a holistic education for our pupils, which enables them to develop socially, emotionally, physically, academically and spiritually. We value and cherish all children equally and celebrate their differences. We recognise and acknowledge that children learn differently. We strive to create a safe and happy learning environment suited to the needs of all pupils.
We strive to create an atmosphere of mutual respect where all members of the school community feel happy and secure working in a spirit of encouragement and enthusiasm while recognising and celebrating diversity.
School History
Scoil Mhuire, Milford
Milford has a long history of education stretching back 200 years since the first school opened in Milford in 1814. In 1896 the Catholic Church applied to the Department of Education for a grant to open a school. This was granted and the newly appointed teacher and children moved into temporary premises until a suitable site could be found. In 1902 the new school consisting of two rooms was opened at the top of the town on a site donated by the 5th Earl of Leitrim.
Due to an ever increasing population by the early 1950s the school had became too small and in 1959 a new school was opened on the present site. This was a three classroom school but due to the ever growing number of children by the time of opening the new building was already too small. A further classroom was built on to the building and later the infant block was added on the lower part of the site.
By the 1980s the school going population had again increased and in the early 1990's an extension was added comprising the General Purpose Room and the Sixth Class classroom. At the same time the rest of the school was refurbished. Improvements to the school building have continued up until the present day with the addition of new doors, fencing etc.
